Underground Christmas Market from Friday 19 November to Tuesday 22 December based on the ‘Christmas Elves’ theme: a real Christmas fairy tale.
Cool in summer and cosy warm in winter, in de Fluweelengrot it's permanently 12 degrees! Visit the one of the oldest caves of South Limburg....
Closely connected to the vivid history of the Castle of Valkenburg is the Velvet Cave, a labyrinth of mysterious passages situated under the Castle Ruins. The Velvet Cave came into being around the year 1050 by exploitation of the caves marlstone, by so-called 'blockbreakers'. The blocks of marlstone extracted from the cave in those days are used to construct the Castle of Valkenburg as well as other buildings in the area. The result of the exploitation of marlstone is an extensive labyrinth of ancient and capricious passages. These secret escape passages, by chance discovered in the year 1937, in those days enable the knights and their warriors to secretly vanish from the castle in times of war, and attack the enemy in the back.
The Christmas Market in the Velvet Cace is a unique subterranean Christmas event in the character of the theme ´Charles Dickens Christmas. The romantic and interpretation of the theme in the decor and staging (moving lights and mirror effects) of the market is spectacular. A wander around the market leads you through a romantically illuminated Christmassy cave with impressive murals and sculptures, a unique 18th- century chapel, stalls with a wide variety of Christmas items and gifts for sale, stalls demonstrating traditional Dutch handicrafts, and a cosy catering establishment. All in all, it is an unforgettable day out for visitors of all ages.
